Magazine show proposal.

Urban Weekly

Urban weekly is about underground artists coming onto the show to talk about their journey on their way to success, what they're doing right now and how they're enjoying it.
The scenery will have a cool vibe to it, very modern in the studio. We'll also have a stage for performances, competitions and Wednesday writers*
We'll have a few minutes of hearing about some new celebritiy gossips; what's hot right now, what's NOT hot right now and new music, keeping our viewers always up to date.
We'll have a styles stop - the change for young designers, stylists to come to the show to get interviewed about their designs eg. A young designer called Jalil Peraza has his own clothing line and during the whole of the Watch The Throne (Jay-Z & Kanye West album) tour, every night of a show, they wore his designers. So that would give us a chance to find out how his designs caught their eyes into them wanting to wear it every time they hit the stage. Then we'll have another talk about artists in the industry that we think have the coolest, laidback but loud outfits where we'll also include alternative outfits to purchase for peers who'd love to dress like them but it was way out of their budget.

To end the show a known musician will perform at UW*

* UW - urban weekly
* Wednesday Writers - a day for young writers to bless the stage with their own creative writing and poetry and also a day for artists to show their artwork.

INSERT

So my group and I decided to base our insert theme on : Fashion.
Main reason because of London Fashion Week happening on the same week so it'd be an amazing idea to view different cultures/traditions under one city.
The intro of our video will explain everything to the viewers so they have a clear explanation of what to expect. We visited Somerset House to pick out our five most stylish outfits worn, with the video having to be 2 minutes long we briefly interviewed people, took their photos and filmed our surroundings which was filled with journalists, bloggers and designers/artists. Cameras were everywhere so it was very easy to grab peoples attention mainly because they knew what we were there for.

The choice of our music was from Azealia Banks who's songs are played nonstop at fashion shows, it has that vogue feeling so it was only right that we used it. The music will be played in the background as a non diegetic effect when no interviews are happening. The equipment used were the Canon 600d, a wheel camera stabilizer and a microphone. Our target audience was for the age 14-28, fashion lovers, people who get inspired by outfits and so on. The language and style is suitable for the age range/target audience.

Pharagraph of our insert data

During our insert about fashion that'll be two minutes long, we will get various footage from shows during london fashion week 2012. London fashion week location is at somerset house so whilst we attend these shows we will also be photographing street styles and 5 powerful and interesting outfits of our choice.

In our videos when we capture the shot of our five by passers we will put tags on the bottom and around the shots of where they have purchased their items to make things easier for our audience who prefer not to spend a lot on an item. We will tag reasonable and alternative clothing/items.

Blog post

I’m 17. College student and just a pretty cool individual.
This course was chosen mainly because I've been in front of the camera most of my life and now I want to be behind it, working the camera. I was in a private performing arts school for 6 years, I had a voice but I never knew until I was about 13 but even before that I lovedddddd singing and would never stop. There was a time where my best friend and I were fascinated with VanJess (Youtube sensations) we then decided to make our own Youtube videos at the age of 14/15 just for the fun of it during our Musical Theatre exams.

I love memories! So I'm thankful that in my young days my parents managed to capture some.
Nigeria (circa 1997 with my cousin, aunts/uncles and brother)
My father.

:)

Before I die I would love to visit MOST countries. I love traveling, it's very refreshing and you always learn something from your trip. In this year so far, I have visited Nigeria & America and I enjoyed it. New site, way of living etc.

I love exploring and going on mini adventures, acting like a tourist in my own city. I love and tend to always learn something new everyday mainly because I make sure I always have a productive day unless rest is in serious need. Life's too short to be sitting down miserable, or depending on something to be done for you, you got to get up, stand on your own two feet and make your dreams reality.

If not carrying my DSLR, my iPhone is always useful. So I just snap away at interesting things I see on my journeys out.

Whenever I'm bored. I don't eat... I draw food.

There are times when I get free stuff sent to me, because they love my style so they email me asking for me to wear their designs. Image is key!

One of my biggest inspirations/idols is Pharrell Williams. One time on Twitter I was being a pest and I asked him "What do you have to have in order to be OTHER" (#iamOther is a movement. It's a way of life. This shared philosophy flows through each pillar within the company: music, film, television, apparel, tech and multimedia.) and then he followed me. I'm currently writing something that will be forwarded to the man himself just for his approval. I shan't say what it is but all shall be told in the near future.

Thanks for listening/reading.

Frankie Boyle

We shouldn't have to apologise and neither should Frankie Boyle. Perhaps it wasn't his best joke but it wasn't his most offensive either. He makes jokes about the Irish famine, paedophilia in the Catholic Church, fundamentalist Muslims, etc In fact, he has a pretty equal policy as a comedian of abusing just about everyone. Jordan put Harvey out in the public eye, for many reasons and the main one is possibly so he feels normal, just like every human.

Not knowing how offensive it came across to some viewers in the near future, we advise people who don't like hearing real life jokes to not watch 'The Frankie Boyle' show, mainly because before it starts airing, we do inform of strong language and possibly offensive jokes reason it being an 18+ show.

Cut out animation.

Terry Gilliam & Lotte Reiniger were two main pioneers when it comes to cut out animation.
Terry is an American born British and Lotte is German. both been fascinated from young with cut outs.
There are many cut out shows. South park was originally a cut out.
Cut-out animation is a process where by moveable parts of the figure are moved to create an illusion of an action. The world's earliest known animated feature films were cutout animations.
Here are some cut outs.

Cut-Out Animation from gunslingers19 on Vimeo.

Gumbasia.

Gumbasia is a a 3 minute 10 second short film produced in 1953 and released on September 2, 1955. It was the first cut out animation produced by Mr Clokey followed by many others. It was a parody of Disney's Fantasia, using stop-motion clay figures. Gumbasia led to funding for his first 'Gumby' film.
There would have been a lot of stop motion frames for this, it must have taken a long time and a lot of patience. I like the idea of something that looks like it’s happening merely being false and not happening at all. In this case, it’s the clay appearing likes it’s moving, when really it isn’t and the old school effects are awesome !

Music video.

MUSIC VIDEOS.
Music videos help to keep the artist or band in the public eye for a few months after the release of their album/single leaving them in the public eye for as long as possible depending on the viewers view.
The purpose of the music video is to also sell the song visually, to give the audience a better understanding of the song (IF music video is narrative) and it's also a promotional tool. There are also three different types of music videos: performance, narrative and concept based. There are music videos that show the artist/band doing a live performance, a narrative one tells a story and a concept based music video

Our main task was to create our own music video. So my group and I first though of visuals. I picked out videos like ADHD by Kendrick Lamar (00:54-1:07, 1:36-1:48) and Urban Outfitters by Vinny Cha$e (the intro) to help us out with our music video seeing as we wanted it to come out looking like an actual professional video and I listen to both of them artists regularly so I picked out the bits that I liked the most and wrote it all down so the members in my team could view it and decide. We then had a hard time thinking of songs. But we eventually managed to pick one that ended up to be the best. Our group started with 4 members, Conor, Georgina, Jordan and Myself and ended with Conor, Georgina & I because of some problem happening outside of our group (nothing to do with any of us) so a group had to be fixed. It was a concept based music video. It was mainly about having fun, it wasn't narrative as much but if you do listen to the lyrics it does say "I'm the liquorice b*tch" whereas everyone knows liquorices are black.. and in the video there are two black girls. So that makes some sense. We all added some ideas into the finished product so it wasn't just one persons idea. Teamwork was great. Location was picked by randomly, we ended up in Oxford Circus and it was rather busy so I took my group down to Soho. A quiet area filled with strange people who haven't gone home since the night before but that's cool, we didn't cause/get into trouble that day! We filmed and made a few interesting conversations with some drunkards, even got to film a pair having a go at each other.
I hope we get some good feedback ! :)

Comparing 2 Idents

My reason for choosing the BBC Two ident was not mainly because it was my own but because it had a history behind it; Flash Gordon & the Zoetrope.

  • Futuristic (Out of this world entertainment)
  • A mixture to the past and future.
The BBC 2 advert is for all orientations but mainly male dominated whereas the Flash gordon one was mainly for olders or young adults who were educated about the zoetrope and such or were just fascinated!

Film noir + script.

{OK, before I get a lot of criticism for this being awkwardly shit.. It's okay. This is just a draft. Criticize away!

FADE IN: into The bar, Conor, Georgina, Jordan & Friends sitting down, drinking, smoking and talking.
Music gets played.

[Newspaper girl (Oyinkan) walks into the bar] : free newspaper! anybody like some or should I just leave right now?
- gestures from the group ordering newspaper girl to bring the newspaper.
"So I've heard that there's some serious crime going on in this little town.. it scares me. Some human being is going round and-
Conor: -Just give us the papers. *clenches jaw*
[Georgina, Jordan eye each other awkwardly]
- newspaper girl leaves.

- CONOR, GEORGINA, JORDAN READ NEWSPAPER-
C: Wow, so finally something is going on in our little city.
G: I know, rather shocking I must say.
J: *nods head*
C: Um, *looks at watch* well guys, I've got to start heading. Have to meet some business partners.
G: business partners? At 10:30pm? *strange look*
C: What's with the face? Business partners don't have closing times on when they shouldn't talk about business. business is always in my head! Got to start heading *takes the last sip of his glass, taps Jordan* see you guys tomorrow! -walks off and out of the bar-

G: guess i better start going too.. It's getting late and I've got an early start tomorrow.
J: Alright, I'm gonna stay for a few, grab a few numbers off these girls & then I'm gonna leave. Get home safely!
G: -puts jacket on & starts to leave- Will do! You too!

- shot of Conor meeting up with friends by the river. Covering his face & looking around, also carrying a bag with him.
-shot of Gina walking home, strangely enough taking a different route from the usual.

-music playing in the background-

Self evaluation

Oyinkan Adeshoye

I think with this channel ident I didn't manage my time very well but it was acceptable.
I managed my time effectiveley with the story boards, mind maps but I didn't manage myself effectively with the actual animation.
There have been times when crew members didn't attend classes which limited some time towards the animation. But I'd rate them a 3 mainly because whenever we are together we get on with our works ASAP and hardly waste time.
I fulfilled my role perfectley if I must say so myself. I did the mind maps, storyboards all on time. I'd give myself a rating of 5.
The animation answered the creative brief mainly because it's colourful with colours of the college which explains the ident and its purpose towards it.
The target audience for this ident is mainly for students, visitors, prospective students and teachers. To improve this ident it could have actually been recorded instead of it being multiple images one after the other. The original idents theme was "College of Balloons" including the logo colours. The idea and story behind it was to have the colours of the college logo on balloons floating around college whilst we take you on a tour around.

What aspects of the brieft did you manage to fulfill?
I managed to actually create a channel ident and put it all in one piece, I managed to do the mind maps and storyboards.
What areas of the project didn't work well? In future what you differently?
The areas that didn't work well was the actual production. We didn't manage to do what we intended on doing in time so we had to do a quick ident. Lack of time messed us up.
What areas of the project are you most proud of?
I'm proud of the storyboards, mind maps. Mainly because they are well detailed.
If I could change anything it would be the actual ident and to use the original idea of the 'College of balloons' idea, showing the colours of the college logo and a quick tour around the college.

Evaluation of Claymation

Gumbasia is a 3 minute 10 second short film that was released September 1955, first clay produced by Art Clokey who by using the same technique went and created Gumby and Davey and Goliath. Gumbasia was created in a style Vorkapich taught called Kinesthetic Film Principles. Described as "massaging of the eye cells" this technique, based on camera movements and stop-motion editing, is responsible for much of the look and feel later seen in Gumby films. Whilst doing the Gumbasia animation it was fun and creative. It did get messy but not too messy to not handle. Aardman is a film and television animation company that produced Wallace and Gromit series. Unlike the claymation productions that the company are famous for, Aardman was cel-animated. The name comes from the Dutch word "aarde" meaning "earth". However, "aardman" is more commonly translated as "goblin". They've released films such as "Wallace and Gromit" "Chicken Run" "Arthur Christmas" "The Pirates! In an adventure with scientists" and "Flushed Away" with an upcoming film called "Shaun the sheep"
Morph was produced for the BBC by Aardman Animations, it is an animated plasticine stop-motion character that appeared with the late Tony Hart which was an early success for Aardman beginning in 1977 on several of his UK TV programmes. Morph and the other plasticine characters could change their morphology. They would become spheres in order to move around, or extrude themselves into cylinders to pass all different levels. They could also mimic objects and change into different characters.
The term morph comes from MetaMORPHism.

The main shapes used in Gumbasia are :

  • circles
  • pyramids
  • cuboids.
The camera angles used in the animation were close ups, wide shots, P.OV shot, over the head shot, birds eye and vertical shots.
To construct this animation they got loads of clay and transformed them into different shapes and sizes whilst using StopMotion. A lot of hand rolling to perfect the shape would have happened. They had to step on the clay with their footwear to give it that finely shoe zig zag, cross design, pencils to give it straight stripes, stalig lights to make the cones vertical and they reversed footage, meaning they played it back to give it that illusion.

Advantages
The advantages with 3d, you can do the objects 360 degrees. unlike cut out which is just one angle.
The limitations of cut out animation are that the objects are very difficult to make it disappear but with claymation its easy to get turning that kind of depth in animation.
With claymation you can do it anywhere, with zoetrope you're restricted to just doing it in the small box sheet.
Disadvantages
  • It's messy
  • Things fall off
  •  Not shaped nicely
  • The clay gets warm and becomes floppy.

Complaint letter.

To BBC,
So I was watching Newsnight the other day on your channel and there was a racist, unpolite, disrespectful man on my screen. He was so racist towards black people in the UK, making out as if black people are violent, rude and claiming that white people have become black, saying that blacks were the main reason for the london riots, were the main ones involved in the riots when CCTV will definitely show you that the riots was a multicultural event. As a young black female, it really irked my soul. You can't just stereotype black people like that, nobody is the same no matter the colour, the colour shouldn't even matter. I found it very offensive. It also being on BBC meaning that a lot of people would have seen it because your channel is a successful major channel worldwide. He's a bad guy and we all know that from what he's saying.

I'd like to know how BBC feels about this because this is such a disgusting, law breaking, vile behaviour that is clearly unacceptable and I don't believe anybody approves of what he's said.

Yours Sincerely,
Oyinkan Adeshoye.

Zoetrope example

Untitled from Oyinkan Adeshoye on Vimeo.

Zoetrope is like a little cinema, which is a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures. It consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides.

  • 32 frames a second,  looks like the image is going through.
  • As the cylinder spins, the user looks through the slits at the picture on the opposite side of the cylinder interior.
Back in the olden days they had to pay $2 to experience moving images through a zoetrope.
The master spin was invented in 1834 by William Horner who called it a "daedalum"(meaning wheel of devil), the faster the rate of spin, the smoother the progression of images, because of its design, more than one person could use the zoetrope at the same time.
The zoetrope works down to persistence of vision, first noted in 1820 by Peter Mark which works like a projector. If we see a light flash every tenth of a second or less, we perceive it as continuous. The impression of each flash of light remains in the retina for at least one-tenth of a second.
  • When you spin the zoetrope you look over the top of the drum at the drawings,  the illusion of the motion is gone.
  • Persistence of vision is a strobospic effect.
  • Images we see must be interrupted by moments of darkness in order for the illusion to work.
The slits in the side of the zoetrope acts like a shutter on a cinema projector.
The Phi Phenomenon is a result of human instinct. Our brains strive to make/give meaning from what we perceive. Movies are composed of images of characters taken from different angles of a variety of distance and shot sizes.
When creating your own zoetrope think of simple shapes to draw, draw it in pencil first just incase you ruin or mess it up then go back over your lines with a dark pen. Use the frames in between one and seven to draw the gradual changes of the metamorphis.

What is the purpose of Pre-Production?

Pre-production is for preparing and planning for the production of our project Les Mort Films which is also our production group.
We signed a group contract which held responsibilities in our group that we had to stick with once signed and agreed on.
My responsibility and job for the production was Director and Scriptwriter.
My individual action plan was with more details about my roles.
The minutes of all meetings we’ve had are all about 20-30 minutes.
The entire script was written by myself; I had to adjust and change some bits because locations etc. The costumes were not hard to decide/get out.
Locations were all decided by each member of the group in the end.
Costumes were all from each members own.

What is Channel Indent?
Channel identification is a practice of radio or televisions identifying themselves through brand names.

The marketing department is responsible for producing the channel idents for the channels. It is essential to guide the viewers in order for them to keep watching. Idents make channels easier and a clear example of what the channel stands for to the audience. They have to sum up the whole personality of the channel: the brand. They help them make the choices. The identity has to be unique with all but mainly channel 4 with their extreme idents. Voiceovers during credits to alert/remind people of watching the next episode next week or to switch over to another channel or onto their online site to watch what they've missed. When it comes to winning an audience, the choice of content is keen.

It will then appear saying 'bin 1' and to rename it, you'd have to right click and rename them to whatever you like. As you can see, I renamed my Audio, Stills and Videos so it's easier to look up and tidier.

Introduction to editing.

The Gloaming.
1.What is editing?
Editing is the process of selecting from different shots and joining them together to tell a story.
2.What is elliptical editing?
It allows us to fill in the gaps, moves the story on more quickly and takes up less actual time on screen.
3.Why are long shots used?
Long shots are used to remind us where the person is and tells us that she is alone.
4.What is ‘non-diagetic sound’?
Music that isn't actually playing at the lake, the character can't hear it but the viewer can. Creates tension.
5.How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why?)
Because it follows the previous shot of her looking down. they fill in the gaps by using elliptical editing.

Hustle.
1.Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?
The director sets out the characters positions in the room and where it takes place.
2.What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?
When the camera cuts back and forth within two characters who are talking/arguing.
3.What is Eye-line matching?
When both eyes of characters involved in the shot reverse shot are matching/looking at each other.
4.Why do we cut to the other members of the group?
So we can see their faces and their reactions to each other at the same time whilst the guy is talking to them.
5.What is a wipe?
To move the action to a different location and time that shows a disorientated view of a building site which fits into the trendy, hip style of hustle.
6.What is the effect of using quick cuts?
Because con artists are always on the lookout for a new hustle, meaning that they have to work quickly so this idea is conveyed through the quick cut of scenes which also keeps the story along and the audience on their toes.

------------------

‘Editing: The Invisible Art’
1.How can editing build tension and pace?
Editing can build tension and pace by the shot changes, long shots, close ups, reactions shots of the main character, also builds tensions by making the shots shorter and more frequent.
2.What is crosscutting?
Cross cutting is when the shots are going back and forth between the two climbers comparing their progress up the hills.
3.What are reaction shots?
A shot which cuts away from the main scene in order to show the reaction of a character to it.
4.What is seamless editing?
Seamless editing is where you seem to know what you are doing with your editing, but the more and more you get deeply involved with the project you get less aware of what is happening.
5.What is a jump cut?
A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly.
6.What is a flash back and what does it achieve?
A flashback takes the audience from one time to another. Often used to show what's known as backstory which is a moment of the characters life that explains how they got to where they are now.
7.How can editing be used poetically?
Through devices like the flashbacks.

Playing with time.
1. non-diagetic sound used with different shots showing that they're on their honeymoon/going to have a good time. close up reaction shots of the lady showing her facial expressions. quick cuts of the same characters but in different scenes and different attire doing the same things. it's like memories, elliptical editing to fill in the gaps, differents shots fading into one another. long shots used to show whats around them/location and that they aren't alone. the elliptical editing created a lot of tension and kept the audience on their toes wanting to know what's next.

Editor Job profile
Editors are one of the key heads in the department of feature films etc. Editors have to make the story make sense and grab the audiences attention, which is one of the biggest elements of filmmaking. The key aspects/skills of being an editor is to be creative at all times, have patience for other people and good organisation skills. MUST have great communication skills, high developed visual awareness and an ability to work and lead a team. The editor works closely with the director putting all the daily rushes into a whole. They also work in the cutting room looking at the day before rushes that are developed overnight at the Film Lab and synced–up by the Assistant Editor.
